Greenville High School’s World History and US History students were able to attend a presentation by Jewish Holocaust survivor, Irene Miller. Ms. Miller, born in Warsaw, was just five-years-old when Nazi Germany invaded on Sept. 1, 1939, to mark the beginning of World War II. She faced sickness, starvation, and loss in the six years to come. Through her emotionally engaging talk, we learned that she was a refugee to Russia, lived in an orphanage, and made her way to Israel where she she became a teacher. Following, Ms. Miller was a hospital director in the US, a director of mental health, director of treatment centers for Drug addicted women and children, and served for a year in Washington DC on an advisory committee for issues related to drug addiction in women and children. In her retirement, she is a docent and speaker for the Detroit Institute of the Arts, a courts mediator, and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Jewish Committee, the oldest civil rights organization in the US. In 2012, Irene published her memoir, Into No Man’s Land: A Historical Memoir. Ms. Miller said, “It has become my mission to talk about the holocaust in order to show what hate and prejudice did and can do unless we learn from it.” This phenomenal opportunity was made possible by World History teacher, LaRissa Paras and generous donations collected.
